Trump no longer at record low in approval rating, but Republicans losing grasp on Congress – poll

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that US President Donald Trump's approval rating has risen to 35%, up from a record low of 33% in late August. However, the poll also reveals growing support for Democrats to gain control of the US Congress, with 44% of Americans favoring Democrats compared to 37% for Republicans in a "generic ballot." This 7-point gap is the widest since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. The poll, conducted after the Republican Party's midterm convention, found that 63% of Americans disapproved of Trump's offer of a $5,000 dividend if Republicans retained Congress. Trump's popularity has declined since the start of the Iran war in February, which has impacted fuel prices. Democrats are now also preferred over Republicans as better stewards of the economy, 38% to 37%.
