Trump pledges 'unmatched military might' against drug cartels at UNGA

At the UN General Assembly, US President Donald Trump pledged to use "unmatched military might" against drug cartels, which he called "the ISIS of the Western Hemisphere." He urged a tougher response to transnational crime and rallied 14 Latin American and Caribbean countries to join the "Shield of the Americas" coalition, advocating for joint sanctions against 24 narcotrafficking groups. Trump stated, "Our actions in Venezuela are proof that the United States will no longer permit threats to America to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere." He also declared that cartels "should be killed, exiled or detained as enemy combatants without the possibility of release." This approach, which he termed the "Donroe Doctrine," has raised concerns among some leaders, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who warned against "renewed hegemonic temptations," stating, "Brazil is nobody's backyard."
