Trump signs executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America," effective immediately. This directive instructs the Department of the Interior and Secretary Doug Burgum to implement the change. Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, borders both Canada and the US state of New York. This action follows Trump's recent claims that Canada has been "ripping off the US for decades" in trade. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded, stating that Lake Ontario will retain its original name, emphasizing its 400-year history. Carney posted on X/Twitter, "The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America." This is not the first such renaming by Trump, who previously renamed the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America" last year.
