Former Associated Press editor Dan Perry argues that continued political support from Donald Trump for Benjamin Netanyahu could severely damage the U.S.-Israel alliance. Perry contends that while Trump has historically equated aiding Netanyahu with aiding Israel, this assumption is no longer valid. He suggests that if Trump intervenes in Israel's upcoming October 27 election to support Netanyahu, it would inadvertently harm Israel by exacerbating internal divisions and further eroding its bipartisan support in the U.S. Netanyahu's potential re-election is predicted to lead to a weakening of judicial independence, increased politicization of oversight institutions, and continued coddling of the ultra-Orthodox minority, which would further alienate American Democrats and a growing segment of younger Republicans.
