U.S. continues to strike Iran; Tehran’s attacks in Jordan may threaten Israel

The United States launched additional airstrikes against Iran on Sunday in retaliation for the killing of U.S. troops in Jordan, where Tehran continued missile attacks, raising concerns about the conflict expanding into Israel. This marks a return to heightened hostilities after a previous interim deal collapsed. The U.S. military reported finding "unidentified remains" of a missing service member following Friday's attack in Jordan, bringing the total U.S. fatalities to 17 since the war began. U.S. Central Command stated its strikes targeted "Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities and missile and drone storage sites" to degrade Iran's ability to control the Strait of Hormuz and punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran's atomic energy agency claimed U.S. strikes hit a planned nuclear power plant construction site. Jordan's military intercepted several Iranian missiles, while Israel warned that missiles launched towards Aqaba could trigger air-raid sirens in Eilat. The Israeli military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, stated, "We are prepared to immediately resume combat." Kuwait also reported attacks on its power and water desalination plants. The Gulf Cooperation Council accused Iran of war crimes for targeting civilian infrastructure. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned of "unforgettable lessons" if U.S. attacks persist, and an Iranian negotiator announced the suspension of commitments to the interim deal. Iranian authorities reported at least 50 killed and 517 wounded in the latest U.S. strikes.
