UK counterterror police take over investigation into suspected murder of ex-lawmaker

UK counter-terrorism police have taken over the investigation into the suspected murder of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, 78, after new evidence emerged. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the change, stating that Counter Terrorism Policing is now leading the inquiry into Widdecombe's death, who was found deceased at her home in southwest England on Thursday. A 28-year-old white British man, initially arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday, has been re-arrested on suspicion of committing, preparing, or instigating “terrorism.” The suspect was apprehended in Yorkshire, approximately 300 miles from Widdecombe's home. Police are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to establish the motivation for the attack, which Mahmood described as a “dark day in our political life” that “raises questions about the security of those in public life.”
