UK ministers tired of leadership’s excuses demand government impose ban on goods from Israeli settlements

During a three-hour House of Commons debate on Thursday, British lawmakers from across the political spectrum urged the government to ban imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. They argued that since Britain considers the settlements illegal under international law, it should align with other countries imposing bans, especially given rising settler violence and settlement expansion. Labour MP Abtisam Mohamed, who led the debate, questioned, "If settlements are illegal, why have we not made an outright ban on trade?" Conservative MP Kit Malthouse added, "We’ve done everything except the obvious, which is just the ban." The government's top Middle East minister, Hamish Falconer, acknowledged concerns from the British Jewish community that a ban could have "unintended consequences" but also indicated that if Israel proceeds with the E1 settlement project, "then we and our friends and allies would take tangible action in response."
