UK police says it thwarted terror plot against Manchester Jewish community before Yom Kippur

UK police arrested two men in their 20s on Newton Street in Manchester on Sunday, suspected of planning a terror attack against the city's Jewish community. The arrests, made under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, thwarted a "long-running proactive investigation" into a plot to target the Jewish community, according to Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans. The timing of the arrests, near the anniversary of a Yom Kippur attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation last year and during the High Holiday period, has caused significant concern. Manchester Mayor Bev Craig and Deputy Mayor Kate Green stated, "this will send a chill down the spine amongst Jewish communities in Greater Manchester." Authorities are increasing visible patrols to provide reassurance.
