UK politicians call for sanctions on Israel as Starmer's Gaza legacy slammed

Over 80 British MPs and lords have urged the UK government to impose comprehensive sanctions on Israel, citing the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) 2024 advisory opinion that deemed Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories unlawful. In a letter to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, led by Labour MPs Imran Hussain and Richard Burgon, they call for measures such as banning trade with illegal settlements, targeted sanctions, suspending the UK-Israel trade agreement, and ending arms transfers. Concurrently, 17 British charities, including Save the Children UK and Amnesty International UK, have pressed incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take decisive action against Israel's actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, criticizing outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer's legacy. Save the Children UK stated, "History will remember your complicity." Burnham has acknowledged that his party "didn’t get it right" regarding Gaza and pledged to do more.
