Ukraine: attack on Iranian vessel 'never intended' to target civilians

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated on Tuesday that Kyiv "never intended to target civilian vessels or people" in a recent attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea. Sybiha conveyed this to his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing that Ukraine's actions are solely for defending against Russian aggression and that "It is Russia who bears full responsibility for all provocations and casualties." He also urged Iran to cease its military support for Russia. Araghchi confirmed Sybiha's assurance that the attack was "unintentional" but stressed that "any attack on our citizens or interests is unacceptable" and demanded restitution for losses. The strike on the Iranian cargo vessel reportedly killed one sailor and injured several others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared to confirm the strikes, mentioning long-range attacks in the Caspian Sea on vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran.
