UN chief of human rights warns Israeli strikes in Lebanon may constitute international crimes

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk expressed concerns that Israeli strikes in Lebanon, causing widespread destruction and displacement, may constitute international crimes. Following a two-day visit to Lebanon, Türk noted the destruction of homes, schools, and infrastructure, stating, "I am struck by the widespread damage and compounded suffering that I have seen." He highlighted potential violations of international humanitarian law, including failures in distinction, proportionality, and precaution, and condemned indiscriminate attacks and the use of white phosphorus munitions. The conflict, which resumed in March 2026 after a ceasefire, has resulted in over 4,300 civilian deaths and hundreds of thousands displaced. Türk's visit precedes a US-brokered peace framework discussion between Lebanon and Israel in Rome on June 26, 2026.
