‘Uncommitted’ founder Alawieh who pushed Democrats to vote against Biden over Gaza wins primary

Abbas Alawieh, a co-founder of the "Uncommitted" movement, has won the Democratic primary for Michigan's 2nd State Senate District, a heavily Arab-American area. Alawieh gained national recognition for orchestrating the campaign to withhold votes from Joe Biden in the 2024 Michigan presidential primary as a protest against the administration's support for Israel's actions in Gaza. He secured 59% of the vote against Erin Byrnes and is now expected to win the general election. Despite his prominent role in the "Uncommitted" movement, Alawieh's state Senate campaign focused on local issues like healthcare, housing, and education, though he noted his stance on Gaza resonated with constituents, stating, "The party was undoubtedly wrong about Gaza in 2024." Alawieh has also met with Kamala Harris to discuss party unity and has publicly condemned antisemitism, stating, "We must stand in unequivocal defense of the humanity and safety of our Jewish siblings and denounce this heinous act."
