Uruguay’s Broad Front endorses government's October 8 pro-Palestinian march in Montevideo

Uruguay's governing Broad Front (Frente Amplio) has unanimously endorsed a pro-Palestinian march scheduled for October 8 in Montevideo. The coalition's national political committee approved the decision, urging supporters to join and calling on President Yamandú Orsi's government to pursue further international action on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The march, organized by Coordinación por Palestina en Uruguay, will begin at 6:30 p.m. in central Montevideo, proceeding toward Plaza Independencia under the slogan “Free Palestine or barbarism.”

The Broad Front accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government of carrying out “genocide” in Gaza.

This stance reflects a more forceful line than the government's, which has not adopted the term “genocide.” The party also called for respect for international law and human rights, specifically mentioning the West Bank and Lebanon, and reiterated its support for a two-state solution. This endorsement follows a 2025 suspension of a cooperation agreement with Hebrew University by Uruguay's government and coincides with concerns over antisemitic incidents in Montevideo.
