US CENTCOM appears to have dropped 900kg bomb on civilian house in southern Iran – report

On Thursday night, the US military reportedly struck Qeshm Island in southern Iran with a large-scale bomb, allegedly hitting a family home. Iranian officials claimed the strike killed a couple and their two-year-old son, displacing approximately 20 neighboring families. A New York Times analysis of videos and satellite imagery suggests the weapon was likely a 2,000-pound (900kg) Mark-84 bomb, one of the largest conventional bombs used by the US military. The NYT investigation found no military sites near the home and no reported military casualties. US Central Command (CENTCOM) is investigating reports of civilian casualties, with spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins stating, “We are aware of the reports and looking into them. The US military never targets civilians.”
