US may ask parents to prove citizenship or immigration status to get passports for their children

The US State Department has proposed requiring parents to provide proof of their citizenship or immigration status when applying for passports for their children. This initiative is part of President Donald Trump's effort to limit birthright citizenship, specifically targeting "birth tourism." The draft guidance, if implemented, would require parents to submit documentation such as passports, birth certificates, or immigration forms. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott stated, "President Trump has been unequivocal that this Administration will protect the meaning and value of American citizenship, full stop, and that includes making sure our passport adjudication process fully reflects that standard." This follows a previous attempt by Trump to limit birthright citizenship that was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Lawyers are challenging the new order, with one judge expressing skepticism about what she called Trump's "unprecedented order."
