US preparing for $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel, including over 40,000 bombs – report

The US is reportedly preparing a $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel, its largest single sale of 2,000-pound bombs in recent years, according to a Tuesday Washington Post report. The package includes 40,000 2,000-pound bombs (20,000 MK-84s and 20,000 BLU-117s) and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads. Congressional committees have been informally notified, and the Trump administration is reportedly pressuring committee leaders for approval. This sale, financed through the US's Foreign Military Financing mechanism, surpasses previous sales, such as a 2025 sale worth $2.04 billion. The MK-84, described as “among the most destructive munitions in Western military arsenals,” can penetrate metal and thick concrete. A senior Trump administration official stated that “all foreign arms sales are moving through the appropriate process” when asked about potential humanitarian concerns.
