US Republican lawmaker seeks Hegseth's impeachment over Iran war

On Tuesday, Republican US Representative Thomas Massie filed articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, alleging abuse of office for ordering hostilities against Iran without congressional approval. The resolution, though unlikely to pass, could force a House vote before the November midterm elections. Massie, a vocal critic of the Iran war, lost his primary in May to a Trump-backed candidate supported by pro-Israel groups. The Pentagon, however, stated, "The entire Department is unified behind the Secretary's vision." Public opinion polls indicate voter unease regarding the war, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli attacks on Iran, and has contributed to declining Republican popularity and rising fuel prices.
