US working to establish Israel-Turkey-Syria deconfliction mechanism after Israeli strikes

The United States is actively working to establish a deconfliction mechanism among Israel, Turkey, and Syria following recent Israeli airstrikes on a Syrian airbase near the Turkish border. US special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, stated that Turkey was not warned about the strikes, which could have led to a military response, but "calm heads were able to prevent the situation from deteriorating further." The strikes on the Abu al-Dahur airbase, about 70 km from the Turkish border, were perceived by Israel as a response to potential increased Turkish presence there. Barrack emphasized, "This underscores the need for a deconfliction mechanism involving Israel, Syria and Türkiye. That is something we are actively working on to establish in order to prevent future miscommunication." Israel has historically conducted strikes in Syria to counter Iranian influence and prevent weapons transfers to Hezbollah, and continues operations against the new Syrian government.
