Venezuela's heavy crude could be swapped for American oil to fill emergency reserve, Wright says

The United States is considering swapping Venezuelan heavy crude for American light or medium crude to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), which is at a 44-year low. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated, "We'll swap you a barrel of heavy crude for a barrel of light or medium United States crude," acknowledging the fluidity of oil markets. Venezuelan crude's high sulfur content and density make it unsuitable for direct storage in the SPR, which typically holds oil with lower sulfur and density. This swap would circumvent quality challenges and help refill the reserve after millions of barrels were released to stabilize markets during the war with Iran. The SPR, the world's largest emergency oil stockpile, is crucial for US energy security, and storing heavy oil presents operational difficulties and higher costs.
