Veteran news anchor Haim Yavin, Israel’s ‘Mr. Television,’ dies at 93

Haim Yavin, known as “Mr. Television” and Israel’s first TV news host, died Wednesday at 93. Yavin, born in Germany in 1932, began his media career in radio before becoming a founding member and host of Israel’s first televised news program, Mabat LaHadashot, from 1968 to 2008. He covered pivotal events such as the 1977 election, where he famously coined the word “mahapach” (upheaval), and the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, announcing that “the prime minister of Israel, Yitzhak Rabin, has died as a result of an assassination.” Awarded the Israel Prize in 1997, Yavin was also a prolific documentarian. His later reputation was affected by sexual misconduct allegations.
