Washington fires burn 250,000 acres, triggering evacuations and power outages in region

Wildfires have burned over 250,000 acres in Washington state, leading to widespread evacuations and power outages, particularly in the Spokane area. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and burn ban. Approximately 4,000 personnel are battling more than a dozen fires, with the Old Trails Fire in Spokane threatening 4,000 structures and prompting the evacuation of at least 200 homes and major facilities like a VA hospital. Utilities company Avista reported 60,000 people without power. Officials noted that high winds and temperatures are exacerbating the situation, with Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove stating, "This is not normal… Throughout the state of Washington we're seeing fires raging." The Kaiser Canyon Fire, at 134,000 acres, is the largest of five major complex fires. Firefighters from over a dozen states and the National Guard are assisting.
