WATCH: Prosecutors move to indict Beersheba man in sedative-laced baby food case

Prosecutors are expected to indict Yan Shemla, a 41-year-old Beersheba resident, for allegedly placing sedative drugs in baby fruit purees sold in Jerusalem. Police will request his continued custody for five days while the indictment is prepared. Shemla is suspected of contaminating Prinok fruit puree jars, leading to the hospitalization of at least four children in Jerusalem earlier this year with symptoms of unusual weakness and drowsiness. Tests confirmed benzodiazepines in the children's blood and clonazepam and lorazepam in the puree. The affected products were purchased at two Zol VeGadol supermarket branches in Jerusalem. Police identified Shemla through extensive security-camera footage and technological tools, followed by covert surveillance before his arrest. The Shin Bet assisted in the investigation; no motive or terrorism link has been identified.
