Democratic voter sentiment towards Israel significantly deteriorated in 2025, marking a "paradigm shift," according to pollster Shibley Telhami. While a decline in sympathy for Israel among Democrats had been ongoing for years, the turning point was attributed to a confluence of events: Donald Trump succeeding Joe Biden as president, Trump's decision to join Israel's attack on Iran, and an intense hunger crisis in Gaza. These events led to hostility toward Israel spreading beyond the Democratic left to the party's mainstream. By February 2025, Gallup polling showed 59 percent of Democrats sympathized more with Palestinians, compared to 21 percent for Israelis. Furthermore, a Pew Research Center poll indicated a drop in favorable views of the Israeli people among Democrats, from 58 percent in 2024 to 43 percent by late 2025, suggesting a shift from criticizing government policies to a more negative view of the populace itself.
