More than 20 Marvel actors, including Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Ruffalo, have joined the "Free Marwan" campaign, advocating for the release of Marwan Barghouti, a Palestinian convicted murderer serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison. The campaign portrays Barghouti as a political prisoner and his trial as illegitimate. However, in 2004, the Tel Aviv District Court convicted Barghouti of five murders, attempted murder, and membership in a terrorist organization. He was found to be a powerful Fatah leader who headed the Tanzim terror group and exercised authority over the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, directing attacks that killed Yoela Chen, Father Georgios Tsibouktzakis, Yosef Habi, Eli Dahan, and Salim Barakat. The court also found insufficient evidence for 21 other deaths, which contradicts the campaign's claim of a politically motivated trial.
