Yair Golan isn’t democracy’s defender if he neglects its norms – opinion

This opinion piece argues that Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party and former IDF deputy chief of staff, undermines democratic norms despite presenting himself as a defender of democracy. The article highlights several instances where Golan's rhetoric and actions are seen as problematic:

• In December 2024, Golan called any vote to dismiss Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara "a full partner in a crime, in the dismantling of democracy and in treason against the State of Israel."
• He also warned Police Commissioner Daniel Levy that after a change in government, "if necessary, we will settle accounts with you as well."
• In May 2025, Golan stated that "a sane country does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby," later clarifying his criticism was aimed at the government.
• In September 2025, he announced plans to remove Shin Bet head David Zini and "clean up the civil service," and at the end of 2025, promised to close Channel 14, describing it as propaganda.
• In July 2026, following deadly events near Gilad Farm, Golan expressed regret for "Israeli and Palestinian lives alike" without distinguishing between victims and an attacker, then blamed the government and settlers.

The author contends that true democratic leadership requires restraint, respect for due process, tolerance of hostile media, and recognition that public institutions must remain independent of political revenge.
