Amar'e Stoudemire inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame
“For 20 years prior, secretly, I was learning Torah, I was learning the Bible, the biblical understanding of history, and I wanted to go to a place where I can live and also play,” the NBA legend said of his time playing in Israel.
Retired American-Israeli basketball star Amar'e Stoudemire was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday, the highest honor for former professional athletes in the sport. Stoudemire, who became an Israeli citizen in 2019 and completed his conversion to Judaism in 2020, reflected on his journey to play in the Israeli Basketball Premier League after a distinguished 14-year NBA career. He stated, "For 20 years prior, secretly, I was learning Torah, I was learning the Bible, the biblical understanding of history, and I wanted to go to a place where I can live and also play." Stoudemire played for Hapoel Jerusalem and Maccabi Tel Aviv, winning league championships in 2017 and 2020, a feat he had not achieved in the NBA. He concluded his career with a championship and finals MVP award.
