Colombia’s Incoming Government To Withdraw From ICJ Case Against Israel

Colombia's incoming government, led by President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, announced its withdrawal from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) case against Israel, initiated by South Africa. This decision follows a meeting between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Colombia’s incoming foreign minister, Omar Bula Escobar, in Washington. The two nations agreed on a roadmap to fully restore diplomatic and economic relations starting August 7, which includes an immediate exchange of ambassadors, mutual removal of visa requirements, and steps toward opening a Colombian embassy in Jerusalem. The new government also pledged to alter Colombia’s stance in international forums, including the UN, and will withdraw the declaration of intervention filed in April 2024 by the previous administration under President Gustavo Petro, who had severed diplomatic ties with Israel in May 2024. The president-elect's office stated, “The historic relationship that the Petro government unilaterally severed will be strengthened once again.”
