European Union seeks to advance trade ban on Israeli settlements

The European Union is considering a ban on trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Golan Heights, following a debate among foreign ministers in Brussels. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that "The option that got the most support was banning the trade with illegal settlements," and ambassadors have been tasked to advance this work. All 27 member states consider these settlements to violate international law. While no final decisions have been made, the proposal aims to limit trade through measures like stricter export licensing, higher tariffs, or an outright ban on goods from territories beyond the pre-1967 lines. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar criticized Kallas, calling it an "obsessive campaign against Israel." The legal basis for such a ban, particularly regarding the required majority vote, remains a point of contention among legal experts.
