David Danieli, a Holocaust survivor, recently met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, grandson of Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog, who rescued Danieli 80 years ago. In August 1946, Danieli was among over 500 Jewish orphans rescued by Rabbi Herzog's Va'ad Hatzala committee and transported by train from Poland. Danieli's wartime survival included being hidden by a non-Jewish family, the Kapitzas, and briefly joining the Hitler Youth. After the war, he learned about his Jewish heritage and joined the rescue train. He attempted to reach Israel on the SS Exodus in 1947, eventually succeeding in 1948. President Herzog expressed that it was "a very moving experience" to meet Danieli, one of the many children his grandfather brought back to the Jewish people.
