Israel and Colombia agree to restore ties, open embassy in Jerusalem

Israel and Colombia have agreed to restore full diplomatic and economic relations, including the mutual exchange of ambassadors and the opening of a Colombian embassy in Jerusalem. This agreement was reached during a meeting in Washington D.C. on Wednesday between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Colombia’s incoming Foreign Minister, Omar Bula Escobar. The move follows a telephone conversation in June between Sa’ar and Colombia’s President-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, who pledged that "Colombia will restore and strengthen its relationship with the State of Israel like never before." This marks a significant reversal of policies under outgoing President Gustavo Petro, who severed ties with Israel in May 2024. Additionally, the two nations agreed to abolish visa requirements and increase Israeli development assistance to Colombia.
