Jerusalem Reform synagogue vandalized, Pride flags torn down in latest attack

Vandals broke into Kol HaNeshamah, a Reform synagogue in Jerusalem's Baka neighborhood, over the weekend, damaging the building and artwork, and tearing down Pride flags. Security footage shows at least three individuals entering the synagogue shortly after midnight. Rabbi Debi Shoua Haim stated, "Precisely during the month of mercy and forgiveness, it is painful to see displays of hatred and violence." Police are investigating the incident, which follows previous attacks on the synagogue related to its support for the LGBTQ+ community, including similar incidents in June 2023 and a rock-throwing in 2018. Reform Rabbi and lawmaker Gilad Kariv condemned the act, attributing it to "incited hooligans" and criticizing the government's role in fostering hostility towards liberal Jewish denominations. Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Yossi Havilio called it part of a "wave of hate crimes against the LGBTQ community." No arrests have been made, but Rabbi Shoua Haim affirmed the congregation's commitment to its values, stating, "Hatred will not defeat our values."
