Knesset approves law reducing authority of Israeli attorney general

On Wednesday night, the Knesset approved a law reducing the authority of the Israeli attorney general (AG) with a 65-51 vote. This legislation, which Justice Minister Yariv Levin called "a necessary step to restore the ability to govern to the elected echelon," weakens two key aspects of the AG's role. Firstly, it negates the binding nature of the AG's legal opinions, meaning the government is no longer obliged to follow their advice. Secondly, it allows the government to represent its own position in court, even if it differs from the AG's, and to appoint outside counsel at state expense if needed. The law also establishes the justice minister's authority over the AG, who must submit activity reports, with a caveat for public interest or conflict of interest. Following its passage, Knesset Member Gilad Kariv and the Zulat Institute immediately petitioned the High Court of Justice, with Kariv stating, "The law will crush the system of checks and balances."
