Murders, shootings, shooting victims and robberies all fell to their lowest levels for the first seven months of any year, according to the governor’s office.
New York City public housing experienced its lowest levels of violent crime during the first seven months of 2026, as announced by Governor Kathy Hochul and NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch. Murders in public housing decreased by 45% compared to the same period in 2025, while shooting incidents fell by 33.3%, and robberies dropped by 19.3%. Overall major crime in public housing declined by 6.3%.
When I became governor, I made public safety my top priority,
Hochul stated, attributing the success to nearly $4 billion in public safety investments. The NYPD Housing Bureau, which serves nearly half a million residents, collaborates with community groups to reduce crime. The state has also committed over $150 million to the NYPD since 2025, including funds for enhanced subway patrols.
