Reed College agrees to sweeping reforms to settle antisemitism investigations

Reed College has agreed to significant institutional changes to resolve multiple federal antisemitism investigations, as announced by the Anti-Defamation League and the Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law. The settlement, filed under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, mandates that Reed College will incorporate language into its discrimination policy stating that "targeting Jews on the basis of their Zionist identity" will be considered discriminatory, recognizing Zionism's integral role for many Jewish people. The private liberal arts school in Portland, Oregon, will also engage a third-party consultant to monitor its adherence to antisemitism protections and implement antisemitism training for faculty and staff. This agreement stems from two anonymous Title VI complaints, including one from a Jewish former student who experienced vandalism and assault during a pro-Palestinian demonstration. Denise Katz-Prober of the Brandeis Center stated, "We believe it should serve as a model for other schools."
