Honduras’ president asked for help, Israel sent eye surgeons

Honduras and Israel's relationship has significantly strengthened, marked by an emergency ophthalmology mission to Honduras. This initiative followed a personal request from Honduran President Nasry Asfura to Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar during Asfura's January visit to Israel. The Israeli delegation, comprising specialists from Sheba Medical Center and organized by MASHAV, Israel’s international development agency, treated 155 patients and performed 136 eye surgeries, addressing high rates of glaucoma and cataracts in Honduras. Dr. Emanuel Schwalb, a senior surgeon, noted, “Despite the differences in working methods, equipment and medical practice, professional and personal ties were formed with the local medical team within a very short time.” This mission is the first phase of a broader aid program, with plans for more medical equipment, professional training, and another delegation later this year.

• President Asfura's government has shifted Honduras's foreign policy, including altering UN voting patterns in Israel's favor and withdrawing from the Hague Group, which coordinates legal action against Israel.
