Jordan condemns Israeli policies in Al-Aqsa, Temple Mount, calls to end 'escalation'

Arab and Muslim officials, including foreign ministers from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority, met in Amman on Wednesday to condemn alleged Israeli "escalation" in Jerusalem. They accused Israel of attempting to alter the "Arab, Islamic, and Christian identity" of the city and its holy sites, particularly the Al-Aqsa Mosque/Temple Mount. Specific concerns included alleged attempts to change the site's historic status quo, facilitate incursions by settlers and officials, restrict Muslim worshippers, and conduct excavations. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stated, "We warn that tampering with the status quo... could trigger a religious conflict." The officials also condemned alleged Israeli violations at Christian holy sites and reaffirmed support for Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem's holy sites.
