Montenegro’s Jewish community navigates uncertain territory as hostility toward Israel increases

Montenegro's Jewish community is experiencing increased hostility toward Israel, a shift from the country's historically welcoming stance. Rabbi Ari Edelkopf, head of the Religious Jewish Community of Montenegro, noted a rise in antisemitism since October 7, stating, "When I came here, I never believed we'd need 24-hour security." This includes "Free Gaza marches in all the major cities" and a violent incident in Budva where Israeli tourists were assaulted and subjected to anti-Israel slurs. Despite a monument commemorating "Operation Velvetta" symbolizing Montenegrin-Israeli friendship, local media is reportedly disseminating anti-Israel narratives. However, Nina Ofner Bokan, president of a progressive Jewish congregation, maintains, "We feel very protected here," highlighting strong interfaith relations and the upcoming completion of Montenegro's first purpose-built synagogue.
