Elderly man dies from West Nile Virus as infected mosquitoes are found in central Israel

A 70-year-old man has died from West Nile Virus, one of 10 confirmed cases in Israel this season, with three other patients currently hospitalized. The Health Ministry reported that the man developed symptoms in July and was hospitalized due to complications. Infected mosquitoes have been found in central Israel, specifically in Tel Aviv, Taybeh, Tira, and Kalansuwa.

“West Nile fever is a disease transmitted to humans through the bite of mosquitoes that feed on infected birds. In most cases, it is a mild disease without symptoms, but in rare cases, severe symptoms may also develop, such as inflammation of the brain or the membranes surrounding the brain. The risk of severe illness is higher among people aged 60 and over and people with underlying medical conditions, so it is particularly important to follow preventive measures,”

said Prof. Sigal Sadetzki, head of the Health Ministry's Public Health Division. Both the Health and Environmental Protection Ministries are urging local authorities to enhance prevention, monitoring, and pest control efforts, and are calling on the public to help by draining standing water, using repellent, and reporting mosquito hazards. The West Nile Virus season typically runs from June to November.
