Turkey says Saudi-Pakistan defense pact mirrors NATO’s Article 5, not aimed at Iran
The new defense pact between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will establish NATO-style security mechanisms, Ankara says.
Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia signed a defense pact on Friday, which Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated is technically identical to NATO's Article 5 mutual defense agreement. Fidan clarified that the accord is not aimed at Iran. The agreement stipulates that "an attack against one is an attack against them all," according to Pakistan's foreign ministry. A committee of ministers and a general secretariat, based in Saudi Arabia, will be formed. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted the agreement will "contribute to cooperation in the fields of security and defense, joint projects in the defense industries, and the fight against terrorism." Egypt may also join the pact.
