Hungarian PM nominates Jewish chess grandmaster Judit Polgar to serve as interim president

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has nominated Jewish chess grandmaster Judit Polgar to serve as interim president, following outgoing president Tamas Sulyok's signing of a constitutional amendment to end his term. This move is part of Magyar’s effort to dismantle former prime minister Viktor Orban’s power structures. Parliament will elect a new president to serve until a new constitution takes effect or for a maximum of five years. Magyar stated on Facebook that Polgar's "name has been synonymous with talent and perseverance for decades" and that the country needs "unity, peace and a president whom every Hungarian can be proud of." He hopes Polgar will accept the invitation, calling it "a huge honor." Polgar is renowned for her exceptional chess career, including being the only woman to cross the 2700-rating threshold.
