Lebanon, Israel conclude 1st day of direct talks in Rome

Lebanon and Israel concluded the first day of direct negotiations in Rome on Tuesday, following a seven-hour meeting at the US Embassy. This sixth round of talks, following five previous rounds in Washington, aims to secure a ceasefire and implement a framework agreement signed on June 26. A high-level Lebanese official described the talks as “positive and constructive,” noting that Israel requested clarifications on the Lebanese army's deployment and control post-withdrawal. A US State Department spokesperson also confirmed the talks were “productive and held in a positive atmosphere,” with both sides eager to continue discussions on Wednesday. The framework agreement outlines a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory, contingent on the Lebanese army assuming full security responsibility and the disarmament of non-state armed groups, specifically Hezbollah. These talks occur amidst ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon, which have resulted in significant casualties and displacement since March 2.
